The small town of Breckenridge, Texas has a great number of beautiful "street art" images...or murals, especially for a town of it's size. Today Breckenridge boasts a population of approximately 5,000, and has the nickname of "The Mural Capital Of Texas." At one time during the oil boom of the 1920's, the population of Breckenridge swelled to over 30,000. It was a town rich in oil and oil rigs were all over the area. It still has it's oil money but nothing like the "boom" years. Today it still has several active oil well pumps all around the downtown area and even one behind the high school football stadium. Football was and is big in Breckenridge. They hold six state championships and two co-championships. Rumor has it that during the time of all the rich oil in the area, owners and bosses of the rigs would discover star quality football players from around the state and offer their father's high paying jobs with the oil companies. Maybe so, just a rumor; however, they certainly did win lots of games. Let it be noted that those types of actions are no longer legal in Texas. Other schools shuddered at the thought of playing in Buckaroo Stadium. I remember some of those days, we were in the same district (the latter years:) So I have put together a gallery of Breckenridge Street Art. This particular one is a part of the "Alex Arnest Kime Mural" and represents a 1965 Nash Rambler. The large, historic murals were painted by Billy Ines. Much of his work is now being preserved at the University of Texas at Arlington and at the Swenson Memorial Museum in Breckenridge.
