Description
This is a photograph of a large hawk that is native to Texas. I'm not sure just what kind of hawk it is, but it is a beautiful bird. I have tried to get a good picture of a hawk for a long, long time...it's not an easy capture. As we were driving along the highway near our home at Possum Kingdom Lake, Texas, I saw this beautiful bird perched on a log right next to the road. I excitedly told my husband to stop. He is used to that command and quite good at turning around in the middle of the road or backing up! He turned around and I just knew the hawk would be gone, but there he was, just waiting for me. Now, most hawks fly away immediately when approached even quietly, but this one just set there and allowed me to get off a number of snaps. I began to worry that maybe he had a broken wing and could not fly, but after he posed for me and looked at me intently for several minutes, he decided that was enough and he spread his huge wings and flew back into the wooded area that surrounded him. Maybe he was an immature, or maybe he was just cold (it was extremely cold that day)...his feathers were fluffed. Whatever the reason, I was so thankful that I had seen him. Such a beautiful specimen.
