Description
This photo of this unusual bird was taken in the Davis Mountains of West Texas at Fort Davis State Park. He was a quarrelsome bird, running all the other birds away from the feeders. Beautiful but with an ugly personality. They are family oriented birds and usually live in small colonies...resulting in a considerable racket for anyone around. They get their name from the fact that they drill small holes into a tree and hammer in acorns, pointed end first, until the surface of the tree is studded with nuts. One famous tree in California was found to be inlaid with more than 50,000 acorns. Fascinating bird. This image would be great in any home or office decor, and it would be especially nice on the walls of a state or national park service office.
