This is an image of some of the magnificent rock formations located in the Chisos Mountains near the Chisos Basin Campground at Big Bend National Park in Texas. If one looks closely at the amazing rock formations that surround the campground, it is possible to find many "mind's eye" images. I call this image "Big Bend Nativity" because it made me think of the nativity scene after the birth of Jesus. You can see it, can't you? On the left stand the eternal images of the three wise men with a small animal standing in front. I think it's a dog...could be a sheep. On the right you can see the Madonna holding the baby Jesus with an angel standing close by. Joseph stands behind Mary. This cluster of rocks stands in a crevice of the Chisos Mountains, and has been standing there for thousands of years. This is just one of many images that can be seen while sitting and enjoying the quiet at one's campground site in the Chisos Mountains. All you have to do is turn your head in any direction and some beautiful image presents itself. This is a beautiful area for small campers, and the drive to the campground is magnificent. Unfortunately, the big rigs can't make the drive and the area is not conducive to backing and turning the big campers. There are other campgrounds for the "Big Boys." Big Bend is a part of the Chichuhuan Desert and the Rio Grande River runs through it.The Rio Grande River is a large, and probably the most famous river in Texas. It forms an international border. Inside the Big Bend National Park you will find sheer, towering walls that rise above the river separating the two countries of the United States and Mexico. Absolutely spectacular. It is in this area that the Rio Grande River makes a dramatic detour and creates it's deep, big bend along the Texas-Mexico border. This is an area basically unchanged for centuries, except for a few campgrounds and one hotel in the Chisos Mountains. What you see, hear and feel when you are in the Big Bend area is what the Apache and Comanche Indians, invading Spaniards, settlers, miners and smugglers saw, heard and felt hundreds of years ago. It is a place that you don't just decide to visit in an afternoon because it is miles and miles and miles from anywhere except the little ghost town of Terlingua. You should definitely visit this beautiful place, but plan to spend a day or two or more just getting there, and then a day or two or more just seeing the place. Big Bend National Park sprawls over an area larger than Rhode Island, covering more than 800,000 acres. Well worth the time and effort.
