Description
Rattlesnakes are scary and dangerous. To their prey they are extremely dangerous; to humans their bite is poisonous and sometimes deadly. They prefer to stay hidden and away from human contact but if disturbed and frightened their strike is deadly swift and on target. First they lunge, the mouth opens wide, the fangs swing out, if it hits its target, the fangs sink in deep, and venom is excreted. This all happens in a matter of about one second. They will give a human warning by vibrating its tail which has sections layered on the tip. These layers are a result of the snake shedding its skin. Each time it sheds, a layer remains loosely attached and results in the "rattle" when the tail vibrates. If you are walking in a wooded or rocky area and you hear a loud buzzing sound....you might want to make a detour.
