While vacationing in Galveston, my grandchildren were amusing themselves by tossing bits of bread into the air and watching as the gulls came flying in, landing almost at their feet. Amid the giggling and shouts of laughter, this particular gull landed near me and just stopped as if saying, "Want to take my picture?" Of course, since my camera was already in my hand, I didn't waste a second, thinking she would fly away before I could click the shutter; however he/she stayed a second or two and gave me different poses before joining the other gulls who were delighting my grandchildren. I think she thought she was pretty. And, she was.
This is a Ring-Billed Gull which is common along the Texas Gulf Coast as well as most coastal areas in North America. It of course can be recognized by the black band on its yellow bill, and its pale yellow eyes. The brown streaked head is an indication that this is an adult gull, probably about three years old. If you have ever been to a beach, you have probably encountered one of these beautiful birds.
