Each year the Sioux Nation holds its annual pow wow or wacipi (Dakota, Lakota or Nakota word for dance). Wacipi is pronounced wa-chee-pee. This particular event is held in Rapid City SD and attracts thousands of American Indian singers and dancers and thousands more visitors from all across the country and Canada attend. It is a traditional Native American cultural celebration that can last from one to several days. Friends meet, camp, visit and reconnect. The highlight of a pow wow is the traditional dance which is full of spirited drumming, singing and fancy footwork and it comes alive with all the brilliant, colorful finery which includes elaborate featherwork and intricate beadwork....absolutely magnificent. The attire worn by the dancers is called "regalia" and should never be called a costume. The dancers take great pride in their beautiful regalia and the development of that regalia can take years to complete. A dancer's regalia should never be touched and should a piece of the regalia become dislodged, it should never be picked up. Instead tell the dancer that it has been dropped and the dancer will pick it up him/herself. A picture of a dancer should never be taken unless he/she is asked.
This is an event that MUST be seen to be appreciated
